Molecular Level

Proper choice of surfactant system capitalizes on surfactant adsorption on rock that alter the surface from oil wet to water wet.  Understanding and  choice of the appropriate surfactant systems and concentration for given oil/water/rock chemistry scenarios is critical. The adsorption and resultant change in wettability is driven by thermodynamics of adsorption.
